10 Best Feats for Sorcerer in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

10 Best Feats for Sorcerer in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

The Sorcerer has always been the ultimate powerhouse of raw, untamed magic in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Sorcerer received a massive glow-up. The biggest and most exciting addition is Innate Sorcery at Level 1, allowing you to spend a Bonus Action to unleash your magical bloodline, granting you Advantage on all Sorcerer spell attack rolls and a +1 to your Spell Save DC for 1 minute! Furthermore, you now get access to Metamagic earlier (Level 2), and you learn significantly more spells than the 2014 version.

Because Sorcerers have a fragile d6 Hit Die and a highly specialized list of known spells, your feat choices should focus on rounding out your spell list, protecting your Concentration, and maximizing your Charisma to make your Innate Sorcery turns completely devastating.

Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Sorcerer based on Metamagic synergy, spellcasting efficiency, and actual play experience.

Understanding the New Feat Types

As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:

  • Origin Feats: Typically acquired at Level 1 via your Background or Species. You can select them at higher levels, but keep in mind they do not provide a +1 stat boost like General Feats do.
  • General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a core stat (like Charisma, Dexterity, or Constitution)!

10. Tough (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Surviving Enemy Fire

Just like the Wizard, Sorcerers suffer from a d6 Hit Die. Unlike Wizards, Sorcerers are often incentivized to play closer to the danger zone (especially if they are using cone spells like Burning Hands or Cone of Cold). Tough adds 2 extra Hit Points per level, effectively giving you the health pool of a Fighter and ensuring you don't instantly drop to zero from a single dragon breath attack.

9. Magic Initiate (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Expanding Utility

Even with the 2024 buffs to spells prepared, Sorcerers still have limited spell selections. Grabbing Magic Initiate (Cleric) gives you access to Healing Word and Guidance, letting you use your Sorcerer slots to heal downed allies in an emergency. Alternatively, Magic Initiate (Wizard) gets you the Find Familiar spell to give yourself Advantage, or Shield to save your known spells for pure offense.

8. Inspiring Leader (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Cha or Wis 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha or Wis

Since Charisma is your primary stat, you will naturally be pushing it to 20. Inspiring Leader lets you use that Charisma to give a 10-minute speech after every Short or Long Rest, granting up to six allies Temporary Hit Points equal to your Level + Charisma modifier. This provides an incredible buffer of free health to your entire party, drastically increasing your overall group survivability.

7. Alert (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Control & Burst Sorcerers

Sorcerers excel at explosive openings. Using Twinned Spell on Hold Person or dropping a Careful Spell Hypnotic Pattern before the enemy lines clash can win a fight on round one. Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative, and the new Initiative Swap feature lets you trade your high roll with an ally, ensuring you cast your ultimate control spell at the exact right moment.

6. Telekinetic (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha

Telekinetic is incredible for Sorcerers. It gives you a +1 to Charisma and an invisible Mage Hand. More importantly, it gives you a Bonus Action to shove a creature 5 feet. If you use Quickened Spell to cast a massive area-of-effect spell (like Cloudkill or Wall of Fire) as a Bonus Action on turn one, you can use your Bonus Action on subsequent turns to mentally shove fleeing enemies back into the flames.

5. Spell Sniper (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha, Int, or Wis

In 2024, Sorcerers are the absolute kings of spell attack rolls thanks to Innate Sorcery (granting Advantage on all spell attacks). Spell Sniper makes this even better. It grants +1 Charisma, lets your spell attacks ignore Half and Three-Quarters cover, and allows you to cast ranged spell attacks in melee without Disadvantage. Scorching Ray cast with Innate Sorcery and Spell Sniper is a guaranteed rapid-fire execution.

4. Elemental Adept (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha, Int, or Wis

The 2024 version of Elemental Adept is a Half-Feat, meaning you get +1 Charisma! For Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers or anyone who loves casting Fireball or Lightning Bolt, this is mandatory. It ensures your spells ignore Resistance to your chosen damage type, and any 1 you roll on a damage die is treated as a 2. Never let a Fire Elemental laugh off your fire spells again.

3. Fey Touched (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha

Sorcerers have highly limited "Spells Prepared." Fey Touched acts as a massive expansion to your spellbook. It gives you +1 Charisma, a free daily cast of Misty Step, and a free 1st-level Divination or Enchantment spell. Picking up Command or Silvery Barbs and casting them with your Sorcerer slots gives you incredible versatility without sacrificing your core blaster spells.

2. Resilient - Constitution (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Con

Sorcerers natively have Proficiency in Constitution saving throws! So why is this here? Because if you are multiclassing (e.g., taking Warlock or Bard at level 1 for armor), you lose that native proficiency. If you start as a pure Sorcerer, you can skip this! If you multiclassed into Sorcerer, taking Resilient (Constitution) is mandatory to keep your Haste or Banishment from dropping and leaving your allies vulnerable.

1. War Caster (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha, Int, or Wis

Whether you started as a Sorcerer or multiclassed, War Caster is the ultimate caster feat. In 2024, it is a Half-Feat (granting +1 Charisma)! It gives you Advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain Concentration. When combined with your native Constitution save proficiency, your Concentration becomes unbreakable. Plus, using your Reaction to cast a devastating Blight or Hold Person on an enemy trying to run past you is too good to pass up.

Sorcerer Build Paths (Level 1-20)

With subclasses unlocking at Level 3 and Metamagic at Level 2, your early game is highly dynamic. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Sorcerer.

Path 1: The Dragon's Breath (Evocation Blaster)

This build focuses entirely on overwhelming elemental damage, using Innate Sorcery to land massive spell attacks.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Alert. Go first to drop a massive AoE before the frontline gets tangled up.
  • Level 4: Elemental Adept (+1 Cha). Ignore resistance to your primary damage type (e.g., Fire for Red Draconic).
  • Level 8: Spell Sniper (+1 Cha). Unleash Scorching Ray from behind cover with Advantage from Innate Sorcery.
  • Level 12: War Caster (+1 Cha). Maximize your Charisma to 20 and secure your Concentration.
  • Level 16: Tough (Origin). Beef up your HP for late-game survival.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Spell Recall. A 25% chance to retain your spell slot upon casting!

Path 2: The Chaos Controller (Wild Magic / Aberrant)

This build focuses on twisting the battlefield, moving enemies, and locking them down with Metamagic.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Magic Initiate (Cleric). Grab Healing Word and Guidance to support the party.
  • Level 4: Telekinetic (+1 Cha). Use your Bonus Action to push enemies into your Web or Evard's Black Tentacles.
  • Level 8: Fey Touched (+1 Cha). Gain Misty Step and a powerful control spell like Command.
  • Level 12: War Caster (+1 Cha). Maintain concentration on your fight-winning spells.
  • Level 16: Inspiring Leader (+1 Cha). Ensure your party survives the chaos with massive Temp HP.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Fate. Manipulate the dice of allies and enemies to ensure your control spells land.

Path 3: The Arcane Duelist (Melee/Touch Sorcerer)

A daring build that relies on close-range spells, high mobility, and defensive magic.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Tough. You absolutely need the health to fight at close range.
  • Level 4: War Caster (+1 Cha). Essential for casting spells as Opportunity Attacks in melee.
  • Level 8: Spell Sniper (+1 Cha). Allows you to use ranged spell attacks (like Fire Bolt) while in melee without Disadvantage!
  • Level 12: Fey Touched (+1 Cha). Get in and out of danger quickly with Misty Step.
  • Level 16: Lightly Armored (+1 Dex). (In the 2024 rules, this core feat grants Light Armor, Medium Armor, and Shields, drastically increasing your AC).
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Dimensional Travel. Teleport for free every time you cast a spell!
