The Ranger has historically been one of the most debated classes in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Ranger has been completely redesigned to be a master of the wilds and a terrifying striker from level one. The clunky Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy features of 2014 are gone. Instead, Rangers now get Spellcasting at Level 1, Weapon Mastery, and free, resource-less casts of their signature spell: Hunter's Mark.
Because the 2024 Ranger heavily relies on Hunter's Mark (which still requires Concentration) and utilizes Weapon Masteries (like Slow on a Longbow or Nick on a Scimitar), your feat choices are incredibly important. You need feats that protect your concentration, enhance your chosen weapon style (archery or dual-wielding), and maximize your action economy.
Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Ranger based on combat efficiency, synergy with Hunter's Mark, and actual play experience.
Understanding the New Feat Types
As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:
- Origin Feats: Typically acquired at Level 1 via your Background or Species. You can select them at higher levels, but keep in mind they do not provide a +1 stat boost like General Feats do.
- General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a core stat (like Dexterity or Wisdom)!
10. Alert (Origin Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Gloom Stalker Rangers
For a Ranger (especially the legendary Gloom Stalker), going first means eliminating a high-priority target before they can even draw their weapon. Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative, ensuring you strike early. The Initiative Swap feature also allows you to trade your high roll with a party member if a different tactical opening is required.
9. Lucky (Origin Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Every Ranger
Since Rangers rely heavily on hitting their attacks to trigger Hunter's Mark damage, missing a shot hurts your overall damage per round significantly. Lucky grants a pool of Luck Points (equal to your Proficiency Bonus) that you can use to gain Advantage on crucial attacks or force enemies to roll with Disadvantage when they attack you.
8. Speedy (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex or Con 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex or Con
Rangers get the Roving feature at Level 6, which increases their speed and grants climbing and swimming speeds. Speedy stacks beautifully with this, giving you +1 Dexterity, an additional 10 feet of movement, and the ability to ignore difficult terrain when Dashing. It also imposes Disadvantage on Opportunity Attacks against you, turning you into a highly mobile skirmisher who can never be pinned down.
7. Resilient - Constitution (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Con
The 2024 Ranger's entire kit revolves around Hunter's Mark, which requires Concentration. If you lose Concentration, you lose your primary damage boost. Resilient gives you a +1 to Constitution and Proficiency in Constitution saving throws. If you play a melee Ranger, this feat is virtually mandatory to ensure your spells stay active while you take hits on the frontline.
6. Mage Slayer (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
Rangers have great Dexterity and decent Wisdom, but they can still fall victim to nasty mental spells. Mage Slayer gives you +1 Dexterity and the Guarded Mind feature, which acts as a Legendary Resistance. Once per rest, if you fail an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma save, you can simply choose to succeed instead. It keeps the hunter from becoming the hunted.
5. Skulker (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
If you want to play a stealthy sniper, the 2024 version of Skulker is a dream come true. It gives you Blindsight out to 10 feet (great for fighting in magical darkness or thick fog) and provides a massive buff to stealth: if you make an attack while hidden and hit, your position is no longer revealed! You can stay in the shadows and rain arrows down on your prey with permanent Advantage.
4. Fey Touched (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Wis
Rangers have a limited number of spell slots, so getting free spells is fantastic. Fey Touched boosts your Wisdom by 1 (increasing your spell save DCs) and grants a free daily cast of Misty Step and a 1st-level Divination or Enchantment spell. Misty Step allows you to easily reposition to higher ground or escape melee without wasting your precious Ranger spell slots.
3. Crossbow Expert (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
If you prefer hand crossbows, this feat is essential. It removes the loading property and allows you to fire ranged weapons while an enemy is within 5 feet of you without Disadvantage. It also allows you to dual-wield a hand crossbow and a melee weapon, giving you immense flexibility as a mid-range skirmisher.
2. Dual Wielder (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
The 2024 rules completely revolutionized dual-wielding. If you use a weapon with the Nick Weapon Mastery (like a Scimitar), you get your extra off-hand attack as part of your main Attack Action, freeing up your Bonus Action. Dual Wielder enhances this further, allowing you to make an additional attack with your Bonus Action if needed, and lets you use larger weapons. Because Hunter's Mark adds damage to every attack that hits, hitting a target 3 or 4 times a turn results in absolutely devastating damage.
1. Sharpshooter (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
The undisputed king of ranged combat. The 2024 version removed the -5/+10 mechanic, but made it a Half-Feat (granting +1 Dexterity). Sharpshooter allows your ranged attacks to ignore Half and Three-Quarters cover, meaning enemies can't hide behind trees or their allies to escape your arrows. It also removes Disadvantage when firing at long range and when firing in melee. Combined with a Longbow (which has the Slow Weapon Mastery), you can effortlessly kite and destroy enemies from across the battlefield.
Ranger Build Paths (Level 1-20)
Your choice of weapons and subclass completely changes how a Ranger plays. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Ranger.
Path 1: The Apex Sniper (Longbow / Hunter)
This build focuses on staying out of reach, ignoring cover, and locking enemies down with the Longbow's Slow mastery.
- Level 1 (Origin): Alert. Ensure you go first to apply Hunter's Mark and start shooting.
- Level 4: Sharpshooter (+1 Dex). Ignore cover and increase your Dexterity.
- Level 8: Skulker (+1 Dex). Stay completely hidden in the shadows even after you hit your targets.
- Level 12: Resilient (+1 Con). Protect your Hunter's Mark concentration if an enemy wizard targets you with a spell.
- Level 16: Fey Touched (+1 Wis). Gain Misty Step to easily teleport to unreachable vantage points.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of the Night Spirit. Become permanently invisible while in dim light or darkness.
Path 2: The Bladed Whirlwind (Melee / Gloom Stalker)
A dual-wielding terror that uses the Nick Weapon Mastery to unleash a flurry of attacks, maximizing Hunter's Mark damage.
- Level 1 (Origin): Tough. You are fighting in melee, so you need the extra Hit Points.
- Level 4: Dual Wielder (+1 Dex). Maximize your number of attacks per round while wielding shortswords and scimitars.
- Level 8: Resilient (+1 Con). Absolutely mandatory to keep Hunter's Mark up while taking melee hits.
- Level 12: Mage Slayer (+1 Dex). Protect your mind with Legendary Resistance against crowd control.
- Level 16: Speedy (+1 Dex). Dart in and out of combat without triggering Opportunity Attacks.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Combat Prowess. Turn a missed attack into a guaranteed hit to ensure your final blow lands.
Path 3: The Beastmaster's Bond (Beast Master)
A tactical build that fights side-by-side with their primal companion, controlling the battlefield and supporting the team.
- Level 1 (Origin): Lucky. Protect yourself and your beast companion from critical hits.
- Level 4: Fey Touched (+1 Wis). Beast Masters heavily rely on Wisdom for their companion's attacks. Grab this early.
- Level 8: Sharpshooter (+1 Dex). Support your beast with a bow from a safe distance, firing past your pet without cover penalties.
- Level 12: Resilient (+1 Con). Keep your supportive concentration spells (like Spike Growth) active.
- Level 16: Mage Slayer (+1 Dex). Guard your mind against mental domination.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Fate. Add or subtract 2d4 to any d20 roll made by a creature, guaranteeing your Beast lands its most crucial attacks.
