10 Best Feats for Wizard in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

10 Best Feats for Wizard in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

The Wizard remains the undisputed master of arcane magic and is arguably the most versatile spellcasting class in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Wizard received some incredible quality-of-life upgrades. You now gain the Scholar feature at Level 1 (granting Expertise in a crucial skill like Arcana), and at Level 5, you unlock Memorize Spell, allowing you to swap out one prepared spell every time you take a Short Rest! This makes the Wizard more adaptable than ever before.

Because Wizards are full spellcasters with a fragile d6 Hit Die, your primary goals when selecting feats are simple: protect your Concentration, increase your survivability, and maximize your Intelligence score as quickly as possible.

Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Wizard based on spellcasting efficiency, battlefield control, and actual play experience.

Understanding the New Feat Types

As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:

  • Origin Feats: Typically acquired at Level 1 via your Background or Species. You can select them at higher levels, but keep in mind they do not provide a +1 stat boost like General Feats do.
  • General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a core stat (like Intelligence, Dexterity, or Constitution)!

10. Lucky (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Surviving Critical Hits

When you have the lowest Hit Die in the game, a critical hit from a monster can instantly drop you to zero HP. Lucky provides you with a pool of Luck Points (equal to your Proficiency Bonus) that you can use to impose Disadvantage on an enemy's attack roll against you. It is a fantastic panic button for when the enemy rolls a natural 20.

9. Magic Initiate (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Utility and Emergency Healing

Wizards have the largest spell list, but they natively lack healing. Taking Magic Initiate (Cleric) gives you access to Guidance and, most importantly, Healing Word. Being able to use your Wizard spell slots to cast a Bonus Action heal on a downed ally can completely prevent a total party kill (TPK) when your actual healer goes down.

8. Keen Mind (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Int

The 2024 version of Keen Mind is perfect for the Wizard fantasy. It grants +1 Intelligence and gives you Expertise in one of your Intelligence-based skills (like Arcana, History, or Investigation). Combined with your Level 1 Scholar feature, you can easily have Expertise in two crucial knowledge skills, making you the ultimate undisputed genius of the party.

7. Tough (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Every Wizard

Wizards are fragile. A Level 5 Wizard with a +2 Constitution modifier only has 32 Hit Points. Tough adds 2 extra Hit Points per level, effectively turning your d6 Hit Die into a d10 (the same as a Fighter). This massive buffer allows you to survive area-of-effect spells or stray arrows that would otherwise break your concentration or knock you out.

6. Spell Sniper (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Int

If you rely on ranged spell attacks (like Fire Bolt or Scorching Ray), this feat is a massive upgrade. Spell Sniper grants +1 Intelligence, lets your spells ignore Half and Three-Quarters cover, and allows you to cast ranged spell attacks while an enemy is within 5 feet of you without Disadvantage. You no longer have to panic and use Misty Step just because a goblin ran up to you.

5. Telekinetic (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Int

Wizards are the masters of creating hazard zones on the battlefield (Web, Evard's Black Tentacles, Wall of Fire). Telekinetic gives you +1 Intelligence and a Bonus Action shove (5 feet). You can cast a devastating area spell with your Action, and then immediately use your Bonus Action to mentally push an enemy who thought they were safe right into the flames.

4. Alert (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Control Wizards

The most important turn for a Wizard is the very first one. Casting Hypnotic Pattern or Slow before the enemies get a chance to spread out can single-handedly win the encounter. Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative and allows you to swap your roll with an ally. You can ensure you go first to shape the battlefield exactly how you want it.

3. Fey Touched (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Int

Yes, Wizards already have Misty Step on their spell list, but Fey Touched gives it to you for free once per day without eating into your prepared spells or spell slots. More importantly, it grants +1 Intelligence and lets you learn a Divination or Enchantment spell. Picking up Silvery Barbs, Bless, or Command expands your capabilities phenomenally.

2. Resilient - Constitution (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Con

A Wizard's most powerful spells all require Concentration. Resilient gives you a +1 to Constitution and Proficiency in Constitution saving throws. As you level up and your Proficiency Bonus increases, this feat ensures that you will almost never fail a standard Concentration check, keeping your Wall of Force or Polymorph active when the party needs it most.

1. War Caster (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Int, Wis, or Cha

War Caster is the undisputed ultimate feat for Wizards in 2024 because it is now a Half-Feat (granting +1 Intelligence)! It gives you Advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain Concentration (which stacks incredibly well with the Proficiency from Resilient). Furthermore, if an enemy provokes an Opportunity Attack, you can cast a spell (like Mind Sliver or Hold Person) instead of making a weak melee attack. It perfectly rounds out your Intelligence while turning your defenses into an impenetrable fortress.

Wizard Build Paths (Level 1-20)

With all Arcane Traditions (Subclasses) moving to Level 3, plotting your feat progression early is highly recommended. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Wizard.

Path 1: The God Wizard (Battlefield Control)

This build doesn't focus on dealing damage. Instead, it focuses on manipulating the battlefield, locking down enemies, and letting the martial characters clean up.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Alert. You must act first to drop Web or Hypnotic Pattern before enemies scatter.
  • Level 4: War Caster (+1 Int). Gain Advantage on Concentration immediately to protect your control spells.
  • Level 8: Telekinetic (+1 Int). Use your Bonus Action to shove enemies back into your spell hazards.
  • Level 12: Resilient (+1 Con). Your Concentration saves are now mathematically almost impossible to fail.
  • Level 16: Fey Touched (+1 Int). Grab a free Misty Step and maximize your Intelligence to 20.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Spell Recall. A 25% chance to completely retain a spell slot when you cast a spell!

Path 2: The Arcane Artillery (Evocation Blaster)

Focused on raw destructive power, this build ensures your spells hit hard and you stay safe while casting them.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Tough. Extra HP ensures you survive counter-attacks after blowing up the room.
  • Level 4: Spell Sniper (+1 Int). Ignore cover and cast ranged spell attacks safely even if rushed by enemies.
  • Level 8: Fey Touched (+1 Int). Teleport to a safe vantage point before unleashing Fireball.
  • Level 12: War Caster (+1 Int). Protect your Concentration on offensive buffs like Greater Invisibility or Haste.
  • Level 16: Keen Mind (+1 Int). Solidify your genius with Expertise in Arcana while rounding out your stats.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Energy Resistance. Gain resistance to two damage types, protecting you from enemy magic.

Path 3: The Frontline Battlemage (Abjuration)

A highly durable build that uses Abjuration's Arcane Ward to absorb damage while fighting at close range.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Magic Initiate (Cleric). Grab Healing Word and Shield of Faith for emergency support.
  • Level 4: War Caster (+1 Int). Cast spells as Opportunity Attacks when enemies try to run away from you.
  • Level 8: Resilient (+1 Con). You will be taking hits in the frontline, so you need high Constitution saves.
  • Level 12: Lightly Armored (+1 Dex). (If your DM allows General Feats from expansions, getting light/medium armor and shields makes an Abjurer functionally immortal).
  • Level 16: Tough (Origin). Add a massive chunk of raw HP underneath your Arcane Ward.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Fortitude. 40 extra HP and self-healing makes you tankier than the Barbarian.
