Following the Fighter, the Rogue is consistently one of the most popular classes in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Rogue received a massive tactical upgrade. The biggest addition is Cunning Strike at Level 5, allowing you to sacrifice Sneak Attack damage dice to inflict devastating conditions like Poison, Trip, or Disarm on your enemies. Furthermore, Reliable Talent has been moved down to Level 7, making you a master of skills much earlier in the campaign.
Because Rogues now have built-in crowd control and utility, the feats you choose should either maximize your damage output, increase your survivability in melee, or guarantee you get to trigger your Sneak Attack as often as possible — including on other people's turns!
Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Rogue based on action economy, Sneak Attack synergy, and actual play experience.
Understanding the New Feat Types
As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:
-
Origin Feats: Taken usually at Level 1 via your Background or Species. However, you can take them anytime.
- General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a stat like Dexterity!
10. Alert (Origin Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Assassins and Tacticians
For a Rogue, going first is incredibly important, especially if you are playing the Assassin subclass (which gives you Advantage against creatures that haven't taken a turn yet). Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative. But the real magic is the Initiative Swap. If you roll high but want the Wizard to cast Hold Person before you strike, you can swap your initiative with them, ensuring your Sneak Attack hits a paralyzed target for an automatic critical hit.
9. Lucky (Origin Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Every Rogue
Rogues are squishy and rely on making a single, massive attack per turn. If you miss that attack, your damage for the round drops to zero. Lucky grants you a pool of Luck Points (equal to your Proficiency Bonus) that you can use to gain Advantage on your attack, guaranteeing a Sneak Attack trigger, or impose Disadvantage on an enemy attacking you.
8. Resilient - Wisdom (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Wis
While Rogues get Slippery Mind at Level 15 (giving them Wisdom and Charisma save proficiency), 90% of campaigns end before that. A Rogue failing a Hold Person or Fear save means zero Sneak Attacks and likely death. Grabbing Resilient for Wisdom saving throws early on ensures you stay in the fight and maintain control of your character.
7. Dual Wielder (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
The 2024 rules introduced Weapon Mastery. If you use a weapon with the Nick property (like a Dagger or Scimitar), you can make your off-hand attack as part of your main Attack Action, freeing up your Bonus Action. Dual Wielder synergizes perfectly with this, allowing you to use slightly larger weapons and giving you an extra attack opportunity to ensure your Sneak Attack lands.
6. Mage Slayer (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
This is a double-threat feat for Rogues. First, it gives you a "Legendary Resistance" once per rest against mental saves (Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma). Second, if a caster within 5 feet of you casts a spell, you can make a Reaction attack against them. Sneak Attack can trigger once per turn, meaning this Reaction attack can apply Sneak Attack damage outside of your normal turn!
5. Piercer (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
Rogues use Rapiers, Shortbows, and Daggers—all of which deal piercing damage. Piercer allows you to reroll one low damage die per turn. While rerolling a d8 is nice, the real power is on critical hits. When you score a critical hit, you get to add an extra damage die of the weapon's type. For an Assassin Rogue built around critical strikes, this adds a nice layer of consistent damage.
4. Defensive Duelist (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
Rogues are notorious for having low AC. While you have Uncanny Dodge to halve damage, sometimes it's better not to get hit at all. If you wield a Finesse weapon, Defensive Duelist lets you use your Reaction to add your Proficiency Bonus to your AC against a melee attack. At level 9, adding +4 to your AC on demand will save you from devastating blows.
3. Crossbow Expert (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
If you prefer to fight at range, this is essential. Crossbow Expert allows you to ignore the loading property of crossbows and removes Disadvantage on ranged attacks when an enemy is within 5 feet. It also allows you to dual-wield a Hand Crossbow and a melee weapon effectively. It turns you into a highly mobile skirmisher who is deadly at any range.
2. Sentinel (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex
This is the ultimate melee Rogue feat because of one mechanical interaction: Off-Turn Sneak Attacks. If an enemy within 5 feet of you attacks an ally, Sentinel lets you use your Reaction to attack them. Because Sneak Attack is limited to "once per turn" (not once per round), this Reaction attack on the enemy's turn fully triggers your Sneak Attack damage again, effectively doubling your damage output per round!
1. Skulker (General Feat)
Prerequisite: Level 4, Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Dex
Skulker received a massive, glorious buff in the 2024 Player's Handbook, making it the undisputed best feat for a Rogue. First, it now gives you Blindsight out to 10 feet, meaning you can fight perfectly in magical darkness or fog clouds. Second, attacking while hidden no longer reveals your position if you hit (it used to only protect you if you missed). You can hide, shoot an arrow, hit your target with Sneak Attack, and remain completely invisible in the shadows. It is the definitive Rogue fantasy perfectly realized in a Half-Feat.
Rogue Build Paths (Level 1-20)
The order in which you take your feats defines your combat role. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Rogue.
Path 1: The Phantom Sniper (Ranged/Stealth)
This build stays hidden, striking from the shadows and manipulating the battlefield from afar.
- Level 1 (Origin): Alert. Ensure you go first to get into a hiding spot.
- Level 4: Skulker (+1 Dex). Fire from hiding without ever revealing your position.
- Level 8: Crossbow Expert (+1 Dex). Eliminate penalties if an enemy manages to close the distance.
- Level 10: Piercer (+1 Dex). Maximize your critical hit damage with your Shortbow or Light Crossbow.
- Level 12: Resilient (+1 Wis). Protect your mind against control spells.
- Level 16: Lucky (Origin). Ensure your single critical shot doesn't miss.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of the Night Spirit. Become permanently invisible and resistant to damage while in dim light!
Path 2: The Back-Alley Brawler (Melee Two-Weapon)
A frontline skirmisher utilizing the new Nick Weapon Mastery to unleash a flurry of attacks.
- Level 1 (Origin): Tough. Extra HP is mandatory for standing in melee.
- Level 4: Dual Wielder (+1 Dex). Wield a Rapier and a Dagger (Nick) to maximize attacks without using your Bonus Action.
- Level 8: Sentinel (+1 Dex). Punish enemies who attack your tank with a massive off-turn Sneak Attack.
- Level 10: Defensive Duelist (+1 Dex). Boost your AC drastically as a Reaction when Sentinel isn't triggered.
- Level 12: Mage Slayer (+1 Dex). Guard your mind and shred casters who try to cast near you.
- Level 16: Speedy (+1 Dex). Increase your mobility to dart in and out of range safely.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Combat Prowess. Turn a missed attack into a guaranteed Sneak Attack hit.
Path 3: The Mage Hunter (Anti-Magic Assassin)
A specialized build designed to shut down enemy spellcasters before they can alter the battlefield.
- Level 1 (Origin): Alert. You must act before the enemy Wizard casts their big spell.
- Level 4: Mage Slayer (+1 Dex). Automatic saving throw successes and Reaction Sneak Attacks on casting.
- Level 8: Skulker (+1 Dex). Use Blindsight to fight inside Darkness or Fog Cloud, shutting down spells that require line of sight.
- Level 10: Mage Initiate (Wizard). Learn Booming Blade and Shield for extra damage and survival.
- Level 12: Sentinel (+1 Dex). Trap casters next to you so they can't run away.
- Level 16: Resilient (+1 Wis). Complete your magical defenses.
- Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Irresistible Offense. Your attacks bypass resistances, shredding magical wards.
