10 Best Feats for Bard in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

10 Best Feats for Bard in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

The Bard is the ultimate jack-of-all-trades and master of many classes in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Bard received some of the most exciting updates in the entire game. The most massive change is to Magical Secrets at Level 10, which now allows you to permanently prepare spells from the Cleric, Druid, and Wizard spell lists whenever you level up! Plus, with new subclasses like the College of Dance, Bards are more versatile than ever.

Because Bards are full spellcasters who also dabble in skills and sometimes melee combat, your feat choices are crucial. You want feats that protect your Concentration on fight-winning spells (like Hypnotic Pattern), boost your Charisma, or expand your already massive support toolkit.

Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Bard based on support synergy, spellcasting efficiency, and actual play experience.

Understanding the New Feat Types

As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:

  • Origin Feats: Typically acquired at Level 1 via your Background or Species. You can select them at higher levels, but keep in mind they do not provide a +1 stat boost like General Feats do.
  • General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a core stat (like Charisma or Dexterity)!

10. Tough (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: College of Dance / Valor Bards

Bards are full casters with a d8 Hit Die. If you are playing a melee-oriented Bard like the College of Valor or the new College of Dance (which relies on unarmed strikes and staying close to allies), you are going to take hits. Tough grants you 2 extra Hit Points per level, ensuring you don't drop unconscious the moment a dragon looks in your direction.

9. Actor (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha

For a roleplay-heavy class like the Bard, Actor is the ultimate social tool. It boosts your Charisma by 1 and gives you Advantage on Charisma (Deception and Performance) checks when trying to pass yourself off as someone else. You can flawlessly mimic the speech of another person. In the hands of a creative Bard, this feat bypasses more combat encounters than a Fireball ever could.

8. Magic Initiate (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Lore and Glamour Bards

While Bards have a fantastic spell list, they natively lack strong defensive reactions. Taking Magic Initiate (Wizard) at Level 1 allows you to grab the Shield spell (which you can cast once for free, and then using your Bard spell slots) along with powerful offensive cantrips like Fire Bolt or Mind Sliver to give you reliable damage when you don't want to burn a leveled spell.

7. Telekinetic (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha

Bards have a lot of Bonus Actions (like giving Bardic Inspiration or casting Healing Word), but on turns where you don't need to inspire anyone, your Bonus Action often sits unused. Telekinetic gives you an invisible Mage Hand and allows you to shove creatures 5 feet as a Bonus Action. You can push enemies into spell hazards or push your allies out of melee reach so they don't take Opportunity Attacks.

6. Inspiring Leader (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Cha or Wis 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha or Wis

This is the quintessential Bard feat. You give a 10-minute speech or performance after a Short or Long Rest, granting up to six allies Temporary Hit Points equal to your Level + Charisma modifier. Since you will be maxing out your Charisma anyway, this feat scales perfectly and essentially acts as a massive pre-heal for the entire party before every single battle.

5. Resilient - Constitution (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Con

Bards possess some of the most devastating Concentration spells in the game (Faerie Fire, Hypnotic Pattern, Polymorph, Animate Objects). If you lose Concentration, you waste your turn and a high-level spell slot. Resilient gives you Proficiency in Constitution saving throws, making sure your crowd-control spells stay active even when you take a massive hit.

4. Moderately Armored (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Light Armor training | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex

Unless you play a College of Valor or Swords Bard, you are stuck with Light Armor and no shield. Moderately Armored requires Light Armor training (which all Bards get at Level 1) and immediately grants you Medium Armor and Shield proficiency. Bumping your AC from a measly 14 up to 19 (Half-Plate + Shield) is the single biggest defensive upgrade a Lore or Glamour Bard can get.

3. Musician (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Every Single Bard

Introduced as an Origin Feat in the 2024 rules, Musician was practically made for Bards. After finishing a Short or Long Rest, you can play a song and grant a number of allies (equal to your Proficiency Bonus) Heroic Inspiration. Heroic Inspiration allows a player to reroll any die. Handing out free rerolls to your entire party every time you take a breather is a staggering boost to team success.

2. Fey Touched (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Int, Wis, or Cha 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha

Fey Touched is a powerhouse for Bards. It bumps your Charisma by 1 and gives you free daily casts of Misty Step and a 1st-level Divination or Enchantment spell. Taking Silvery Barbs, Bless, or Command expands your spell list significantly, and having a free teleport guarantees you can escape grapples or melee combat without wasting a Bard spell slot.

1. War Caster (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Spellcasting | Stat Bonus: +1 Cha, Int, or Wis

War Caster is the undisputed king of caster feats in 2024 because it is now a Half-Feat (granting +1 Charisma)! It gives you Advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain Concentration (pairing beautifully with Resilient later on). Furthermore, it allows you to cast a spell as an Opportunity Attack. If an enemy tries to run past you to hit your Wizard, you can use your Reaction to hit them with Dissonant Whispers or Hold Person. It is mathematically and tactically brilliant.

Bard Build Paths (Level 1-20)

Whether you want to be a frontline dancer or a backline spell-slinging maestro, your feat progression is key. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Bard.

Path 1: The Lore Maestro (Support/Control)

This build focuses on staying safe, maximizing spellcasting efficiency, and locking down the battlefield.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Musician. Give your entire party Heroic Inspiration after every rest.
  • Level 4: Moderately Armored (+1 Dex). Grab a shield and Half-Plate to fix your low AC.
  • Level 8: War Caster (+1 Cha). Secure your concentration and punish enemies who run past you.
  • Level 12: Fey Touched (+1 Cha). Maximize your Charisma to 20 and gain emergency teleportation.
  • Level 16: Resilient (+1 Con). Your Concentration is now virtually unbreakable.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Spell Recall. A 25% chance to completely retain a spell slot when you cast a spell!

Path 2: The Valor Skirmisher (Melee Gish)

College of Valor lets you replace an attack with a cantrip in 2024. This build thrives in the thick of combat.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Tough. You need maximum HP to survive frontline combat.
  • Level 4: War Caster (+1 Cha). Cast spells with your hands full of weapons and shields, and cast Booming Blade on Opportunity Attacks.
  • Level 8: Fey Touched (+1 Cha). Teleport into the enemy backline to assassinate their casters.
  • Level 12: Inspiring Leader (+1 Cha). Buffer your own HP (and the party's) before charging in.
  • Level 16: Resilient (+1 Con). Keep your self-buffs (like Haste or Greater Invisibility) active.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Combat Prowess. Turn a missed weapon attack into a guaranteed hit.

Path 3: The Dance Controller (Unarmed Support)

The new College of Dance Bard is highly mobile, dodges attacks, and supports allies with movement.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Magic Initiate (Wizard). Grab the Shield spell to stack with your unarmored defense.
  • Level 4: War Caster (+1 Cha). Advantage on concentration is mandatory for a melee-range caster.
  • Level 8: Telekinetic (+1 Cha). Push enemies away from your allies to trigger your Dance abilities safely.
  • Level 12: Actor (+1 Cha). Maximize Charisma and become the ultimate out-of-combat infiltrator.
  • Level 16: Speedy (+1 Dex). Increase your movement speed and avoid Opportunity Attacks when you dash.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Fate. Add or subtract 2d4 to any d20 roll made by a creature you can see, ensuring your team always lands the final blow.
