10 Best Feats for Barbarian in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

10 Best Feats for Barbarian in D&D 5e Ranked (2024)

The Barbarian is the undisputed king of melee survival and raw physical power in D&D 5e. In the 2024 Player's Handbook, the Barbarian received massive quality-of-life updates that completely revitalized the class. Rage is now much easier to maintain (you can spend a Bonus Action to keep it going if you didn't attack), lasts a full 10 minutes, and scales better. The incredibly underwhelming "Brutal Critical" feature was completely replaced by Brutal Strike at Level 9, allowing you to trade your Reckless Attack Advantage for extra damage and powerful crowd-control effects (like knocking enemies away or slowing them down).

Because Barbarians are hyper-focused on Strength, Constitution, and hitting things as hard as possible, your feat choices are critical. You need feats that maximize your damage output with Weapon Mastery, give you reliable Reactions, or fix the Barbarian's biggest weakness: saving throws against magic.

Here is my ranking of the best feats for the 2024 Barbarian based on damage output, action economy, and actual play experience.

Understanding the New Feat Types

As with all 2024 classes, feats are now categorized:

  • Origin Feats: Typically acquired at Level 1 via your Background or Species. You can select them at higher levels, but keep in mind they do not provide a +1 stat boost like General Feats do.
  • General Feats: Taken at Level 4 or higher. Almost all combat feats are now "Half-Feats," meaning they grant a +1 to a core stat (like Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution)!

10. Lucky (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Surviving Bad Rolls

Barbarians have Reckless Attack to get Advantage on attacks, but what happens when you need to make a critical saving throw? Lucky grants you a pool of Luck Points (equal to your Proficiency Bonus) that you can use to gain Advantage on a d20 roll or impose Disadvantage on an enemy. It is a fantastic safety net for a class that often throws itself into the most dangerous situations on the battlefield.

9. Alert (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Tactical Initiators

Barbarians want to enter their Rage and engage the enemy immediately. Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative. More importantly, it lets you swap your initiative roll with a willing ally. If you roll highest but your Wizard wants to drop a Fireball or cast Haste on you before you charge in, you can swap your turns to create the perfect tactical opening.

8. Dual Wielder (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex

Dual-wielding Barbarians are incredibly viable in 2024! Every attack you make while Raging applies your Rage damage bonus. If you use a weapon with the Nick Weapon Mastery (like a Scimitar or Sickle), you can make your off-hand attack as part of your main Attack Action. Dual Wielder lets you use slightly larger weapons and ensures you can output a flurry of attacks without clogging up your Bonus Action (which you need to activate Rage).

7. Tough (Origin Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 1 | Best for: Every Barbarian

Barbarians already have the largest Hit Die in the game (d12), but because they use Reckless Attack, enemies constantly have Advantage against them. You will take a lot of hits. Tough adds 2 extra Hit Points per level. Because Rage halves incoming bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, those 2 extra HP effectively act as 4 HP per level against most physical attacks!

6. Charger (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex

Barbarians get Fast Movement at Level 5, making them incredibly quick. Charger capitalizes on this mobility. If you move 10 feet in a straight line before hitting a creature, you can deal an extra 1d8 damage or push the target 10 feet. It turns your Barbarian into a battering ram, allowing you to knock enemies off cliffs or away from your squishy spellcasters.

5. Resilient - Wisdom (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4 | Stat Bonus: +1 Wis

A Barbarian's biggest fear isn't a dragon — it's a spellcaster with Hold Person, Fear, or Dominate Person. If you fail a Wisdom saving throw, you stop attacking, which can cause your Rage to drop. Taking Resilient for Wisdom saving throws is essentially a mandatory "tax" for high-level Barbarians to ensure they aren't mind-controlled into killing their own party.

4. Sentinel (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex

You are the tank, but D&D doesn't have an "aggro" mechanic. Smart enemies will try to run past you to kill the Wizard. Sentinel solves this. If you hit a creature with an Opportunity Attack, their speed becomes 0. Furthermore, if an enemy within 5 feet of you attacks someone else, you can use your Reaction to strike them. It forces the Dungeon Master to deal with your Barbarian first.

3. Mage Slayer (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str or Dex

While Resilient is great, Mage Slayer is the ultimate anti-magic tool in 2024. It grants a feature called Guarded Mind: if you fail a saving throw for Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, you can choose to succeed instead (once per Short or Long Rest). Giving a Barbarian a "Legendary Resistance" against their weakest saves turns them into an unstoppable juggernaut.

2. Polearm Master (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str or Dex 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str

Action economy is everything. Polearm Master gives you a Bonus Action attack (dealing 1d4 damage) and a Reaction attack when an enemy enters your reach. Because every single attack benefits from your flat Rage damage bonus and Strength modifier, making three attacks per round with a Halberd or Glaive results in a massive, consistent damage output.

1. Great Weapon Master (General Feat)

Prerequisite: Level 4, Str 13+ | Stat Bonus: +1 Str

The king of melee feats remains on top. The 2024 rework removed the -5 accuracy penalty. Now, once per turn when you hit with a Heavy weapon, you add your Proficiency Bonus to the damage. Combined with Reckless Attack, this guarantees a massive chunk of free damage every single round with zero downside. You also still get a Bonus Action attack if you score a Critical Hit or drop an enemy to 0 HP. Since it now gives +1 Strength, it fits perfectly into your stat progression.

Barbarian Build Paths (Level 1-20)

The order in which you take your feats defines your combat role. Here are three optimized paths for the 2024 Barbarian.

Path 1: The Brutal Behemoth (Heavy Weapon Striker)

This build uses a Greataxe or Greatsword to deliver the highest possible single-target damage.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Tough. Maximize your HP pool to soak hits from Reckless Attack.
  • Level 4: Great Weapon Master (+1 Str). Get your passive damage boost online immediately.
  • Level 8: Mage Slayer (+1 Str). Protect your mind from magical crowd control.
  • Level 12: Charger (+1 Str). Gain the mobility to close the gap on ranged attackers.
  • Level 16: Resilient (+1 Wis). Cement your defense against enemy spellcasters.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Irresistible Offense. Your physical strikes bypass all resistances, ensuring nothing can stop your wrath.

Path 2: The Immovable Object (Lockdown Tank)

Using a Glaive or Halberd, this build controls the battlefield and stops enemies from reaching the backline.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Alert. Ensure you go first to establish the frontline choke points.
  • Level 4: Polearm Master (+1 Str). Get your Reaction attack ready for anyone who approaches you.
  • Level 8: Sentinel (+1 Str). When enemies enter your reach, you hit them and drop their speed to 0.
  • Level 12: Great Weapon Master (+1 Str). Add reliable damage to your numerous attacks.
  • Level 16: Mage Slayer (+1 Str). Guard your mind so you don't drop your defensive formation.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Combat Prowess. Turn a missed critical attack into a guaranteed hit.

Path 3: The Primal Whirlwind (Dual-Wielding)

Abusing the Nick Weapon Mastery (e.g., Scimitars/Handaxes) to make multiple attacks and stack Rage damage.

  • Level 1 (Origin): Savage Attacker. Reroll damage dice to ensure your multiple hits hurt.
  • Level 4: Dual Wielder (+1 Str). Increase your weapon flexibility and damage die size.
  • Level 8: Charger (+1 Str). Dash between targets, adding burst damage to your flurry of blows.
  • Level 12: Mage Slayer (+1 Str). Give yourself Legendary Resistance.
  • Level 16: Resilient (+1 Wis). Ensure you never get mind-controlled.
  • Level 19 (Epic Boon): Boon of Fortitude. Gain a massive HP boost to survive your reckless frenzy.
